Just like humans, dogs need their teeth brushed every day. Besides freshening their breath, it reduces tartar and helps prevent periodontal disease. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste specially designed for dogs. For chronic problems, you should consult your veterinarian.

Similar to people, visits to the dentists should be supplemented by daily toothbrushing at home. While we normally visit the dentist once a year, it is imperative that your canine friend come to a professional groomer for teethbrushing much more frequently (6-8 times) to prevent peridontal disease. This disease results in loss of attachment of the teeth to those tissues. Once a bacterial infection becomes established inside of the tooth it can cause an abscess involving the bone and soft tissues around the tooth. If the infection involves the first molar tooth on the mandible, it may cause enough destruction of the bone or the lower jaw to cause a pathologic fracture.
